Cannes: The best and worst outfits the festival has seen

Since the 1940s, Cannes' red carpets have played host to more than their fair share of eye-catching outfits. The festival has become as much a showcase for stars' designer dresses as it has for groundbreaking new cinema and - for followers of fashion - this has certainly made it all the more entertaining. From the good to the bad and the chic to the eccentric, MSN Her takes a look at some of the most memorable frocks seen at Cannes in recent years.

Cate Blanchett
Cate has a record of picking outfits that are guaranteed to turn heads on the red carpet. This long, flowing number is one of her most beautiful.

Icelandic maverick Björk stuck to her eccentric ways by dressing up as a Christmas decoration while promoting Dancer In The Dark at Cannes in 2000.

With Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria standing little over five feet tall , she almost managed to ensure there was more dress than person on the red carpet with this outfit.

Angelina Jolie came across as a green goddess at the Cannes premiere of Kung Fu Panda in 2008, and proved that being pregnant with twins is no barrier to being irresistibly sexy.

Paris Hilton committed this fashion faux pas while attending a Cannes charity event in 2001; the use of a beret failed to distract from the fact that someone appeared to have scribbled over her dress with a silver pen.

Actress Milla Jovovich certainly stood out at the Palme d'Or closing ceremony in 2008 by wearing this turquoise number.

Singer-turned-actress Madonna also made a controversial choice of outfit for the premiere of her 1991 movie Truth or Dare.

Kirsten Dunst looks electric in this blue number she wore to the Palme D'or ceremony in May 2010.

Stunning as ever, Salma Hayek impressed in this Gucci dress at the Palme D'or ceremony in May 2010.

Sesame Street's Big Bird must have been furious after French star Melanie Laurent copied his style at Cannes in 2008.

Another French actress, Emmanuelle Beart, caused red carpet confusion by wearing an outfit which may as well have been made out of duvet covers in 2005.

British actress Tilda Swinton has never been one to stick to fashion convention, but this baggy grey trouser suit from 2007 was a real shocker.
